Chapter 14

¹ Queen Esther also, fearing the danger that was at hand, had recourse to the Lord.
² And when she had laid away her royal apparel, she put on garments suitable for weeping and mourning: instead of divers precious ointments, she covered her head with ashes and dung, and she humbled her body with fasts: and all the places in which before she was accustomed to rejoice, she filled with her torn hair.
³ And she prayed to the Lord the God of Israel, saying: O my Lord, who alone art our king, help me a desolate woman, and who have no other helper but thee.
⁴ My danger is in my hands.
⁵ I have heard of my father that thou, O Lord, didst take Israel from among all nations, and our fathers from all their predecessors, to possess them as an everlasting inheritance, and thou hast done to them as thou hast promised.
⁶ We have sinned in thy sight, and therefore thou hast delivered us into the hands of our enemies:
⁷ For we have worshipped their gods. Thou art just, O Lord.
⁸ And now they are not content to oppress us with most hard bondage, but attributing the strength of their hands to the power of their idols,
⁹ They design to change thy promises, and destroy thy inheritance, and shut the mouths of them that praise thee, and extinguish the glory of thy temple and altar,
¹⁰ That they may open the mouths of Gentiles, and praise the strength of idols, and magnify for ever a carnal king.
¹¹ Give not, O Lord, thy sceptre to them that are not, lest they laugh at our ruin: but turn their counsel upon themselves, and destroy him that hath begun to rage against us.
¹² Remember, O Lord, and shew thyself to us in the time of our tribulation, and give me boldness, O Lord, king of gods, and of all power:
¹³ Give me a well ordered speech in my mouth in the presence of the lion, and turn his heart to the hatred of our enemy, that both he himself may perish, and the rest that consent to him.
¹⁴ But deliver us by thy hand, and help me, who have no other helper, but thee, O Lord, who hast the knowledge of all things.
¹⁵ And thou knowest that I hate the glory of the wicked, and abhor the bed of the uncircumcised, and of every stranger.
¹⁶ Thou knowest my necessity, that I abominate the sign of my pride and glory, which is upon my head in the days of my public appearance, and detest it as a menstruous rag, and wear it not in the days of my silence,
¹⁷ And that I have not eaten at Aman's table, nor hath the king's banquet pleased me, and that I have not drunk the wine of the drink offerings:
¹⁸ And that thy handmaid hath never rejoiced, since I was brought hither unto this day, but in thee, O Lord, the God of Abraham.
¹⁹ O God, who art mighty above all, hear the voice of them, that have no other hope, and deliver us from the hand of the wicked, and deliver me from my fear.

Chapter 14

¹ in the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the month, when the king's commandment and his decree drew near to being put into execution, on the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to conquer them, (but it was turned out the opposite happened, that the Jews conquered those who hated them),
² Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus, to lay hands on those who wanted to harm them. No one could withstand them, because the fear of them had fallen on all the people.
³ the princes of the provinces, the satraps, the governors, and those who did the king's business, helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai had fallen on them.
⁴ Mordecai was great in the king's house and his fame went out throughout all the provinces; for the man Mordecai grew greater and greater.
⁵ Jews struck all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and with slaughter and destruction, and did what they wanted to those who hated them.
⁶ Susa, the palatial city, the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men.
⁷ killed Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,
⁸ Adalia, Aridatha,
⁹ Arisai, Aridai, and Vaizatha,
¹⁰ ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jew's enemy, but they did not lay their hand on the plunder.
¹¹ that day, the number of those who were slain in Susa, the palatial city, was brought before the king.
¹² king said to Esther the queen, "The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Susa, the palatial city, including the ten sons of Haman; what then have they done in the rest of the king's provinces! Now what is your petition? It shall be granted you. What is your further request? It shall be done."
¹³ Esther said, "If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews who are in Susa to do tomorrow also according to this day's decree, and let Haman's ten sons be hanged on the gallows."
¹⁴ king commanded this to be done. A decree was given out in Susa; and they hanged Haman's ten sons.
¹⁵ Jews who were in Susa gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and killed three hundred men in Susa; but they did not lay their hand on the spoil.
¹⁶ other Jews who were in the king's provinces gathered themselves together, defended their lives, had rest from their enemies, and killed seventy-five thousand of those who hated them; but they did not lay their hand on the plunder.
¹⁷ was done on the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of that month they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.
¹⁸ the Jews who were in Susa assembled together on the thirteenth and on the fourteenth days of the month; and, on the fifteenth day of that month, they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.
¹⁹ the Jews of the villages, who live in the unwalled towns, make the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, a good day, and a day of sending presents of food to one another.
²⁰ wrote these things and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both near and far,
²¹ enjoin them that they should keep the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month Adar yearly,
²² the days in which the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned for them from sorrow to gladness and from mourning into a good day; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness and of sending presents of food to one another and gifts to the needy.
²³ Jews accepted the custom which they had begun, as Mordecai had written to them;
²⁴ Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them and had cast "Pur," that is the lot, to consume them and to destroy them;
²⁵ when this became known to the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked plan, which he had devised against the Jews, should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.
²⁶ they called these days "Purim," from the word "Pur." Therefore, because of all the words of this letter and of what they had seen concerning this matter and of what had come to them,
²⁷ Jews established, and imposed on themselves and on their descendants and on all those who joined themselves to them, so that it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to what was written and according to its appointed time every year;
²⁸ that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fall from among the Jews, nor the memory of them perish from their seed.
²⁹ Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew, wrote with all authority to confirm this second letter of Purim.
³⁰ sent letters to all the Jews, to the one hundred twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth,
³¹ confirm these days of Purim in their appointed times, as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had decreed, and as they had imposed upon themselves and their descendants, in the matter of the fastings and their cry.
³² commandment of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.
